Over the years, the construction industry has tightened safety regulation on a global scale. It stands to reason then, that new solutions will be needed in order to help construction companies stay in compliance, while also maintaining working efficiency. This is what ATIS aims to accomplish, through automation of inspection logging, collecting attestation of inspections, and maintaining accurate records.
While the first and most vital step in the process of inspecting equipment is conducting the inspection itself, the next step (and most often overlooked) is to keep records of these inspections. This is important for two reasons.
1. Safety For Future Use. When you pick up a piece of equipment, it is important that you know the status of that equipment before you put it in use. This can only be accomplished if there is some method in place for storing the results of each inspection. This would allow the next user to view the most recent equipment status through viewing the results of prior inspections.
2. Trackability. Safety equipment has a shelf life. By maintaining accurate dates and records of use, companies and workers can ensure that they are not exceeding these shelf lives, or missing inspections when they come due. Furthermore, by maintaining a digital paper trail of use and inspections, companies will be able to give account for the proper maintenance of their equipment in case of any accidents. This could potentially reduce legal litigation and help with safety audits.
Inspections for critical construction safety equipment is traditionally kept on paper, in binders, and toted around with from job to job with the crews. This process can be unreliable, time consuming and labor intensive. That is where ATIS comes into play. Through digital automation, construction crews will no longer need to rely on paper-based inspection logging.
- Fall Protection Equipment.
According to OSHA “Personal fall protection systems must be inspected before initial use during each work shift for mildew, wear, damage, and other deterioration, and defective components must be removed from service.” ATIS provides a reliable means of tracking inspection data and maintaining accountability for fall protection equipment.
OSHA reports that falls are the leading cause of construction related deaths. In the year 2020 there were 351 fall related deaths among construction workers. Therefore, it is imperative that companies are maintaining accountability for the proper inspection and certification of fall protection equipment.

- Critical Load Carrying Equipment.
This could include Human External Cargo (HEC), Personal Carrying Device System PCDS.
- First Aid Equipment.
This can include AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) which provide critical life saving care for workers.
It all starts with the RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tag that can be digitally assigned to specific pieces of equipment. These tags can be scanned through ATIS, at which time all past inspection data and equipment status can be viewed instantaneously.
Pre-use Inspections can also be conducted within the app itself. By simply scanning the tag, workers can view the pre use inspection checklist, and check the boxes adjacent to the assigned steps as they inspect the equipment. When these steps are completed, they will finish the inspection, and the data will be stored within the database.
When a worker conducts an inspection through ATIS, they are certifying that the inspection was done correctly. This collects the worker’s attestation to the equipment’s working condition and gives the green light for it to be used safely.
